Synopsis

Ninety-year-old Nina is a family symbol – for her, Soviet nostalgia is today, where May 9 is a self-esteem pilgrimage. Her offspring Irina, torn between raising her adult daughter, her husband Raul’s controlling tirades and her mother’s abuse, wipes away her tears and wishes everyone the best. As a holy picture in the background, the TV screen occasionally shows the leader Putin. Tokalov takes the viewer into the daily life of his loved ones – the Russian-speaking community of Latvia, Purvciems. Together with DOP and co-scriptwriter Valdis Celmiņš, the director has created an honest documentary close-up – in a way, it is a “perfect historical melodrama” about his family, the ethnic division of Latvia and belonging to the Russian-speaking society for the last 30 years. Without promises that “everything will alright”, it discusses nationally important issues of integration, historical memory, propaganda and identity war. The one that maps our consciousness and choices.
